[S]cience is more than a body of knowledge; it is a way of thinking. I have a foreboding of an America in my children's or grandchildren's time – when the United States is a service and information economy; when nearly all the key manufacturing industries have slipped away to other countries; when awesome technological powers are in the hands of a very few, and no one representing the public interest can even grasp the issues; when the people have lost the ability to set their own agendas or knowledgeably question those in authority; when, clutching our crystals and nervously consulting our horoscopes, our critical faculties in decline, unable to distinguish between what feels good and what's true, we slide, almost without noticing, back into superstition and darkness.
The dumbing down of America is most evident in the slow decay of substantive content in the enormously influential media, the 30-second sound bites (now down to 10 seconds or less), lowest common denominator programming, credulous presentations on pseudoscience and superstition, but especially a kind of celebration of ignorance.
— Carl Sagan, The Demon-Haunted World: Science as a Candle in the Dark (New York: Ballantine Books, 1996) at p.32.

It’s not often I agree with Bill Clinton, but…
The former President had some rather apt remarks to make last night regarding the current President and Conspiracy Theorist-in-Chief: If you want a president who defines the job as spending hours a day watching TV and zapping people on social media, he’s your man. Indeed. For fuck’s sake, President Hump doesn’t even “go to work” […]
Trump Wasn’t Invited to Throw Out First Pitch
The paper of record: An hour before Dr. Anthony S. Fauci threw the first pitch at the season opener between the New York Yankees and the Washington Nationals, President Trump stood on the briefing room stage at the White House and declared that he, too, had been invited to throw out his own opening pitch. Remember when?
Oh how I long for the days when the so-called Conservatives were giving then-President Obama unmitigated hell over his handling, or supposed mishandling, of the 2014 Ebola outbreak. You remember that? Those were the days! There were 11 total cases in the United States — ELEVEN — and 2 deaths. Yeah, those were the days. […]
Vice President Mike Pence is a Fucking Lying Lier
I don’t believe the President has ever belittled the threat of the coronavirus —Vice President Mike Pence, 1 April 2020 on CNN. I know that Mike Pence is a politician, and that you can tell when a politician is lying because you can see his or her lips moving. I also know that Pence, as […]

The Case Against Donald Trump
The Editorial Board of the paper of record: He is a racist demagogue presiding over an increasingly diverse country; an isolationist in an interconnected world; a showman forever boasting about things he has never done, and promising to do things he never will. Precisely.
