News Gathering vs. Confirmation Bias
- Remember, if you do not have at least one source of news that you turn to regularly, with which you routinely disagree, then you are not practicing news gathering! You are practicing [confirmation bias].

[S]cience is more than a body of knowledge; it is a way of thinking. I have a foreboding of an America in my children's or grandchildren's time – when the United States is a service and information economy; when nearly all the key manufacturing industries have slipped away to other countries; when awesome technological powers are in the hands of a very few, and no one representing the public interest can even grasp the issues; when the people have lost the ability to set their own agendas or knowledgeably question those in authority; when, clutching our crystals and nervously consulting our horoscopes, our critical faculties in decline, unable to distinguish between what feels good and what's true, we slide, almost without noticing, back into superstition and darkness.
The dumbing down of America is most evident in the slow decay of substantive content in the enormously influential media, the 30-second sound bites (now down to 10 seconds or less), lowest common denominator programming, credulous presentations on pseudoscience and superstition, but especially a kind of celebration of ignorance.
— Carl Sagan, The Demon-Haunted World: Science as a Candle in the Dark (New York: Ballantine Books, 1996) at p.32.

R.I.P. Cassidy Landry
It is with heavy heart the I bid a loving farewell to my precious Cassidy, the matriarch of the Landry family, who passed away this morning at the age of 71. She was a lovely, loving girl, and a driving force in our lives. She will be forever loved and missed.
California governor signs controversial right-to-die bill
Physician-assisted suicide will become legal in California under a bill signed into law today by Democratic Gov. Jerry Brown, making it the fifth state in the nation to give terminally ill patients a legal right to die. As hard as it may be to believe in today’s ultra-political culture, my Mom–who was an RN–told me […]
Damn the Torpedoes by Tom Petty & the Heartbreakers
All these years later, “Damn the Torpedoes” by Tom Petty & the Heartbreakers still has one of the best drum sounds of any album I’ve heard…
Six months and man’s best friend
Six months. Six months and I still can’t see his picture without getting emotional. Cisco was a remarkable dog; he was a wonderful companion, but more than that, he was a friend, taken far too soon. Damn I miss him.

R.I.P. Cisco Landry
Cisco Landry, faithful companion and devoted friend, passed away peacefully this evening at approximately 4:45pm with his family, Chrissy, Paul and Justin Landry, at his side. He will be forever loved and missed.
Why Dogs are Man’s Best Friend
Our dog Cisco, has lymphoma, and sadly is nearing end-of-life. His lymphoma is advanced, and he is beginning to show signs of pain that his medication cannot control. Yet, he keeps trying to comfort me, and my wife who is distraught, over the difficult but necessary decision to put an end to his suffering. Oh, […]
On Furnaces, Falls, and Childhood Memories…
Ah, the momentary musty aroma of the furnace turning on for the first time in the Fall, after its long rest through the Spring and Summer… It lasts only a minute or two, but each year that familiar fragrance transports me instantly back in time to my childhood home and warm memories of my mom, […]
Essential Rules of Gunfighting Everyone Should Know
(You may someday have to apply one or more of these…) 1) Bring a gun; when possible, bring at least two guns, all of your friends that have guns and FOUR TIMES the ammunition you think you could ever need. 2) Guns have only two enemies: rust and inexperience. a) Practice. Practice reloading one-handed and […]
Independence Day, Rain and Neighbors…
Today’s forecast: 4-6 inches of rain over the next 24 hours! Say what you will, but over the last couple years I’ve come to love it when it rains on the 4th of July, and so does my homeowners insurance carrier (ba-doom-ching). That’s because the people who live on our cul-de-sac (and the neighboring streets, […]
