News Gathering vs. Confirmation Bias
- Remember, if you do not have at least one source of news that you turn to regularly, with which you routinely disagree, then you are not practicing news gathering! You are practicing [confirmation bias].

[S]cience is more than a body of knowledge; it is a way of thinking. I have a foreboding of an America in my children's or grandchildren's time – when the United States is a service and information economy; when nearly all the key manufacturing industries have slipped away to other countries; when awesome technological powers are in the hands of a very few, and no one representing the public interest can even grasp the issues; when the people have lost the ability to set their own agendas or knowledgeably question those in authority; when, clutching our crystals and nervously consulting our horoscopes, our critical faculties in decline, unable to distinguish between what feels good and what's true, we slide, almost without noticing, back into superstition and darkness.
The dumbing down of America is most evident in the slow decay of substantive content in the enormously influential media, the 30-second sound bites (now down to 10 seconds or less), lowest common denominator programming, credulous presentations on pseudoscience and superstition, but especially a kind of celebration of ignorance.
— Carl Sagan, The Demon-Haunted World: Science as a Candle in the Dark (New York: Ballantine Books, 1996) at p.32.

Cream always rises to the top: Van Halen’s A Different Kind of Truth
Recently in a fit of nostalgia — or maybe it was because I happened to catch David Lee Roth on Jay Mohr‘s podcast — I bought last year’s Van Halen A Different Kind of Truth. Plus, what the hell — I’ve already got the rest of the Van Halen catalog (and the David Lee Roth […]
David Lee Roth: Always, at any given time, have a song that you’re listening to over and over again
Always at any given time have a song that you’re listening to over and over again. It can be brand new – it can be the latest Keisha single – it can be an old Stones song that you just rediscovered – hey, “Tumbling Dice” – I’ve been listening to it for the last two […]
Roger Ebert: Self-help books are bullshit.
Simple wisdom from Roger Ebert in April 2010: Self-help books are bullshit. Read a good book. That’ll help you. Indeed.
Your vote counts. Your opinion matters.
Danny de Gracia writing at The Washington Times Communities, “Ron Paul and Gary Johnson’s supporters are not a ‘nonfactor’ in this election”: WASHINGTON D.C., October 10, 2012 – America has fallen a long and terrible way from George Washington’s farewell address in which the first U.S. president warned “I have already intimated to you the […]
On the National Debt
At this late stage of the game, if you can’t stand up and lay out in two minutes more than a few VERY SPECIFIC details about precisely what you’d cut in order to balance the budget – a prerequisite for paying off the national debt – and balance it fast, then you have no business […]
Let Gary Johnson Debate!
Gary Johnson is polling at 10.6% in the “battleground state” of Ohio. No wonder “the system” is so afraid of letting Gary Johnson debate… Jesse Ventura knows about polling low and winning elections, and he says, “Let Gary Johnson Debate“! When Jesse ran for Governor in 1998, he was polling at 8%… UNTIL he appeared […]
Why I Refuse to Vote for Barack Obama
Conor Friedersdorf writing for The Atlantic: Why I Refuse to Vote for Barack Obama — The case against casting a ballot for the president — even if you think he’s better than Mitt Romney I don’t see how anyone who confronts Obama’s record with clear eyes can enthusiastically support him. I do understand how they […]
What? Tea Party Republicans are Facing Serious Re-election Challenges?
AP Campaign 2012 (@APCampaign) on Twitter: Tea Party Republicans caught between promises to cut spending and demands of constituents back home: apne.ws/QUHRxk #Election2012 What? Tea Party Republicans are facing serious re-election challenges? Even those who won by double-digit margins just two years ago? Please -– please — take a moment and picture, if you will, […]
A few thoughts on “Voter Photo ID”
I understand the purpose: to help prevent voter fraud; and while reasonable opinions vary as to any supposed secondary or non-stated purpose(s), I don’t feel that reasonable opinions can vary on the importance of eliminating voter fraud. That being said, you have to admit it seems a little peculiar that you need a Photo ID […]
