News Gathering vs. Confirmation Bias
- Remember, if you do not have at least one source of news that you turn to regularly, with which you routinely disagree, then you are not practicing news gathering! You are practicing [confirmation bias].

[S]cience is more than a body of knowledge; it is a way of thinking. I have a foreboding of an America in my children's or grandchildren's time – when the United States is a service and information economy; when nearly all the key manufacturing industries have slipped away to other countries; when awesome technological powers are in the hands of a very few, and no one representing the public interest can even grasp the issues; when the people have lost the ability to set their own agendas or knowledgeably question those in authority; when, clutching our crystals and nervously consulting our horoscopes, our critical faculties in decline, unable to distinguish between what feels good and what's true, we slide, almost without noticing, back into superstition and darkness.
The dumbing down of America is most evident in the slow decay of substantive content in the enormously influential media, the 30-second sound bites (now down to 10 seconds or less), lowest common denominator programming, credulous presentations on pseudoscience and superstition, but especially a kind of celebration of ignorance.
— Carl Sagan, The Demon-Haunted World: Science as a Candle in the Dark (New York: Ballantine Books, 1996) at p.32.

FINALLY! Biden Beats Trump
Ladies and gentlemen: our long national nightmare is finally over: Joe Biden has been elected the 46th president of the United States of America. Hopefully, Sleepy Joe — by being a rational adult — will be able to reverse the awful situation that Trump has brought us concerning our allies and enemies. It’s funny, but […]
The Case Against Donald Trump
The Editorial Board of the paper of record: He is a racist demagogue presiding over an increasingly diverse country; an isolationist in an interconnected world; a showman forever boasting about things he has never done, and promising to do things he never will. Precisely.
AMG Remembers Eddie Van Halen
All Music Guide: Eddie Van Halen, 1955-2020 His dazzling, pyrotechnic playing set a new standard for guitar heroes, and cemented Van Halen as one of hard rock’s defining bands. From his boatload of classic riffs to his remarkable array of techniques to his beaming charisma, few guitarists made such a singular impact. Indeed.
Steve Jobs died 9 years ago
Nine years later, and this piece by The Onion is still perhaps the best eulogy: CUPERTINO, CA—Steve Jobs, the visionary co-founder of Apple Computers and the only American in the country who had any clue what the fuck he was doing, died Wednesday at the age of 56.
R.I.P. Dury’s in Nashville, Tennessee
I missed this — really missed this — from 4 months ago, when I was still in a fog from the forced work from home. Dury’s, the landmark Nashville photography store, that opened in 1882 as one of the original eight Kodak dealers appointed by George Eastman himself, has closed: From the Dury’s website (link […]
Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg Dies at 87
The Notorious R.B.G., only the second woman appointed to the United States Extreme Court, and without question one of the Court’s most important and consequential Justices, is dead at 87. The paper of record: Ruth Bader Ginsburg, the second woman to serve on the Supreme Court and a pioneering advocate for women’s rights, who in […]
Remembering the ‘Faith-based Initiative’ we call 9/11 (2020)
I essentially re-post this every year: Those in authority should take appropriate precautions to protect our citizens. But we will not allow this enemy to win the war by changing our way of life or restricting our freedoms. (emphasis added) –George W. Bush, 43rd President of the United States, remarks made during press conference/photo opportunity […]
If We’re Truly Going to Eradicate Racism, Then We’ve Got to Take It Out of Ourselves First
I wish I’d seen this two and a half months ago when it came out… Powerful, powerful statement from one of my favorite photographers, and more importantly, favorite photography instructors, Zack Arias: I, as a white man, have been so insulated from the Black experience, that I… cannot really form any opinion that is anywhere […]
The Guilty Dog Barks the Loudest
Brian McCullough on the Techmeme Ride Home for 2 July 2020: Sometimes, you fear the most the thing you suspect in others that you know you’re guilty of yourself. This concept was known to our parents and grandparents generations as, “The guilty dog barks the loudest.” It’s why spouses who cheat, come to believe that […]
Biden Will Make America Lead Again
William McRaven, retired Navy admiral, former Navy SEAL, and commander of the U.S. Special Operations Command from 2011-2014, writing at the Wall Street Journal* (paywalled)(free apple news link): For all the challenges the past 20 years brought on this country—for all the loss, the heartache, the hubris and the errant decisions—in times of crisis, the […]
