- Remember, if you do not have at least one source of news that you turn to regularly, with which you routinely disagree, then you are not practicing news gathering! You are practicing [confirmation bias].

[S]cience is more than a body of knowledge; it is a way of thinking. I have a foreboding of an America in my children's or grandchildren's time – when the United States is a service and information economy; when nearly all the key manufacturing industries have slipped away to other countries; when awesome technological powers are in the hands of a very few, and no one representing the public interest can even grasp the issues; when the people have lost the ability to set their own agendas or knowledgeably question those in authority; when, clutching our crystals and nervously consulting our horoscopes, our critical faculties in decline, unable to distinguish between what feels good and what's true, we slide, almost without noticing, back into superstition and darkness.
The dumbing down of America is most evident in the slow decay of substantive content in the enormously influential media, the 30-second sound bites (now down to 10 seconds or less), lowest common denominator programming, credulous presentations on pseudoscience and superstition, but especially a kind of celebration of ignorance.
— Carl Sagan, The Demon-Haunted World: Science as a Candle in the Dark (New York: Ballantine Books, 1996) at p.32.

Army Reverses Course: Will Consider Renaming Bases that Honor Confederate Leaders
The Army secretary is open to changing the names of 10 Army bases that were named for Confederate leaders, Military.com has confirmed. Secretary Ryan McCarthy will consider the changes if he has bipartisan cooperation from leaders at the local and congressional level an Army official told Military.com. Politico first reported the news about renaming the […]

Trump’s behavior regarding Russia has always presented a serious security concern
Longtime conservative Republican Tom Nichols in USA Today, “All signs point the same way: Vladimir Putin has compromising information on Donald Trump”: Trump’s behavior regarding Russia has always presented a serious security concern. But when Trump fires the director of the FBI, and then brags about it to actual Russians, only the most stupid or […]
Congress Criticizes FBI Quest for iPhone ‘Backdoor’
Ed Hardy writing at Cult of Mac: Congress has called the FBI on the carpet for its attempt to require Apple to build a backdoor into the iPhone. A letter went out today from a bi-partisan group of representatives accusing the law enforcement agency of over-stating difficulties in unlocked iPhones involved in crimes. The ten […]
Absent warrant standard, police could monitor anyone via location data
ARS Technica: This case, Carpenter v. United States, asks a simple question: is it OK for police to seize and search 127 days of cell-site location information (CSLI) without a warrant? Previously, lower courts have said that such practices are compatible with current law. But the fact that the Supreme Court agreed to hear the […]
All are equal, but not all are treated equally
Rabbi Shai Held writing at CNN: If you’re white and you don’t believe that white privilege is real, talk to an African-American parent about “the conversation,” in which they teach their children to be cautious and tentative around officers of the law.
Fundamental rights may not be submitted to a vote; they depend on the outcome of no elections
I find this particularly compelling, and it dispenses with dissenting arguments in toto: Of course, the Constitution contemplates that democracy is the appropriate process for change, so long as that process does not abridge fundamental rights. Last Term, a plurality of this Court reaffirmed the importance of the democratic principle in Schuette v. BAMN, 572 […]
Supreme Court extends same-sex marriage nationwide
Associated Press on Twitter: MORE: The Supreme Court’s ruling means 14 states will have to stop enforcing their bans on same-sex marriage Tennessee being one of those 14 states. Not to pat myself on the back, but I’ve been calling this one for a decade on Equal Protection grounds, even before that awful ‘Tennessee Marriage […]

Associated Press: COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) — The leader of the Ohio Senate put a stop Tuesday to a bill that would have imposed the most stringent restriction on abortions in the nation. The chamber doesn’t plan to vote on the so-called “heartbeat bill” before the end of the legislative session next month, Republican Senate President […]
