News Gathering vs. Confirmation Bias
- Remember, if you do not have at least one source of news that you turn to regularly, with which you routinely disagree, then you are not practicing news gathering! You are practicing [confirmation bias].

[S]cience is more than a body of knowledge; it is a way of thinking. I have a foreboding of an America in my children's or grandchildren's time – when the United States is a service and information economy; when nearly all the key manufacturing industries have slipped away to other countries; when awesome technological powers are in the hands of a very few, and no one representing the public interest can even grasp the issues; when the people have lost the ability to set their own agendas or knowledgeably question those in authority; when, clutching our crystals and nervously consulting our horoscopes, our critical faculties in decline, unable to distinguish between what feels good and what's true, we slide, almost without noticing, back into superstition and darkness.
The dumbing down of America is most evident in the slow decay of substantive content in the enormously influential media, the 30-second sound bites (now down to 10 seconds or less), lowest common denominator programming, credulous presentations on pseudoscience and superstition, but especially a kind of celebration of ignorance.
— Carl Sagan, The Demon-Haunted World: Science as a Candle in the Dark (New York: Ballantine Books, 1996) at p.32.

The Best and Worst of Us
Donald Trump1 is clearly the worst of us — just the worst of humanity. Dolly Parton, of course, is the best of us. If aliens ever visit the Earth, we can tell them almost everything they need to know about our species by simply pointing to these two individuals, the worst and best of us. […]
Bitching much about face masks?
They’ll likely never admit it, but the people bitching endlessly today about wearing a fucking face mask, and staying home if you don’t need to go out, and keeping your distance, and not gathering in large groups, etc., are the same type of people who would have bitched endlessly about rationing during WWII. And the […]
Being Non-Racist vs Begin Anti-Racist
Emmanuel Acho in his truly wonderful YouTube series, Uncomfortable Conversations with a Black Man: Being non-racist is still tolerating racism, but not volunteering yourself as a racist. Being anti-racist is speaking out against racism whenever you see it. — Emmanuel Acho, Uncomfortable Conversations with a Black Man, E10 with Chelsea Handler @ 10:16.
What Would You Say if You Saw It in Another Country?
From the paper of record’s “The Morning” briefing: Imagine that a president of another country lost an election and refused to concede defeat. Instead, he lied about the vote count. He then filed lawsuits to have ballots thrown out, put pressure on other officials to back him up and used the power of government to […]

The Final Debate
Or should I say, The Final Debase… The paper of record: But the debate wasn’t normal by the standards of nearly all of American history. It wasn’t normal because one of the nominees — the sitting president — told one lie after another. He did so about the virus, North Korea, China, Russia, climate change, […]
Biden Will Make America Lead Again
William McRaven, retired Navy admiral, former Navy SEAL, and commander of the U.S. Special Operations Command from 2011-2014, writing at the Wall Street Journal* (paywalled)(free apple news link): For all the challenges the past 20 years brought on this country—for all the loss, the heartache, the hubris and the errant decisions—in times of crisis, the […]
The Case Against Donald Trump
The Editorial Board of the paper of record: He is a racist demagogue presiding over an increasingly diverse country; an isolationist in an interconnected world; a showman forever boasting about things he has never done, and promising to do things he never will. Precisely.
If We’re Truly Going to Eradicate Racism, Then We’ve Got to Take It Out of Ourselves First
I wish I’d seen this two and a half months ago when it came out… Powerful, powerful statement from one of my favorite photographers, and more importantly, favorite photography instructors, Zack Arias: I, as a white man, have been so insulated from the Black experience, that I… cannot really form any opinion that is anywhere […]
Photos Show Difference in How Police Responded to Anti-Racism Protests and the Siege at the U.S. Capitol
The linked article is good and CBS’s photos of the attempted coup d’état at the U.S. Capitol yesterday by Trump-supporting domestic terrorists are telling, but I personally prefer this from The Recount: In case you can’t tell — and please, watch the linked video — the photo on the left shows a police officer in […]
