News Gathering vs. Confirmation Bias
- Remember, if you do not have at least one source of news that you turn to regularly, with which you routinely disagree, then you are not practicing news gathering! You are practicing [confirmation bias].

[S]cience is more than a body of knowledge; it is a way of thinking. I have a foreboding of an America in my children's or grandchildren's time – when the United States is a service and information economy; when nearly all the key manufacturing industries have slipped away to other countries; when awesome technological powers are in the hands of a very few, and no one representing the public interest can even grasp the issues; when the people have lost the ability to set their own agendas or knowledgeably question those in authority; when, clutching our crystals and nervously consulting our horoscopes, our critical faculties in decline, unable to distinguish between what feels good and what's true, we slide, almost without noticing, back into superstition and darkness.
The dumbing down of America is most evident in the slow decay of substantive content in the enormously influential media, the 30-second sound bites (now down to 10 seconds or less), lowest common denominator programming, credulous presentations on pseudoscience and superstition, but especially a kind of celebration of ignorance.
— Carl Sagan, The Demon-Haunted World: Science as a Candle in the Dark (New York: Ballantine Books, 1996) at p.32.

People: Those We Lost in 2022
Tough year. Particularly tough for me was Taylor Hawkins. I’ve been a Foo Fighter fan for years and years. In fact, I couldn’t listen to Foo Fighters music from the time I learned of Taylor Hawkins’ death, until the London tribute concert — 5 and a half months. Gone, but not forgotten.
The Funniest Fucking Podcast
I like podcasts, and have liked them for a long time. I’ve listened to SModcast since episode 3. I’ve listened to WTF with Marc Maron since episode twenty-something. And, of course, I’ve listened to and/or watched This Week in Tech and MacBreak Weekly forever. My point is, I’m a big podcast fan, and I’ve been […]
Have you noticed?
Have you noticed that most of the women who are against abortion are women you wouldn’t want to fuck in the first place, man? — George Carlin, A Place for My Stuff (1981). Some things never change…
R.I.P. Gilbert Gottfried
Gilbert Gottfried, the stand-up comedian with the shrill voice known for his performances equal parts chaotic, clever and crude, has died after a long illness, his family announced Tuesday. He was 67. Damn.
Chappelle on Saving America from Itself
Recently rewatched some Dave Chappelle standup. Dave Chappelle, Sticks and Stones (2019) at 40:39: I’ve given this a lot of thought. I don’t see any peaceful way to disarm America’s whites. There’s only one thing that’s gonna save this country from itself – the same thing that always saves this country from itself. And that […]
George Carlin’s Birthday
George Carlin was born on this day in 1937. He is sorely missed. Carlin on religion: Because folks, I gotta tell ya, when it comes to bullshit, truly major-league bullshit, you have to stand back in awe — in awe of the all time heavyweight champion of false promises and exaggerated claims — religion — […]
Doug Stanhope on farts
Jeff Brown and I used to eat at The Sahara Dinner Buffet where I had, to this day, the best spectacle of bowel-wrenching flatulence of my life. The room was full of mostly elderly people, tables tightly packed, and we were seated dead center. It was silent except for the slight tinkling of silverware on […]
How I Met Your Mother is Scrubs
I’ve been watching “How I Met Your Mother” on Netflix streaming, and I really like the show. I’ve been having the feeling that the show was very familiar, even though I never watched it when it was on television (every episode is new to me). I figured it’s because it’s an ensemble sitcom, and I’ve […]
The more you say I can’t say something
The more you say I can’t say something, the more urgent it is for me to say it. And it has nothing to do with what you’re saying I can’t say. It has everything to do with my right — my freedom — of artistic expression. That is valuable to me. That is not separate […]
