- Remember, if you do not have at least one source of news that you turn to regularly, with which you routinely disagree, then you are not practicing news gathering! You are practicing [confirmation bias].

[S]cience is more than a body of knowledge; it is a way of thinking. I have a foreboding of an America in my children's or grandchildren's time – when the United States is a service and information economy; when nearly all the key manufacturing industries have slipped away to other countries; when awesome technological powers are in the hands of a very few, and no one representing the public interest can even grasp the issues; when the people have lost the ability to set their own agendas or knowledgeably question those in authority; when, clutching our crystals and nervously consulting our horoscopes, our critical faculties in decline, unable to distinguish between what feels good and what's true, we slide, almost without noticing, back into superstition and darkness.
The dumbing down of America is most evident in the slow decay of substantive content in the enormously influential media, the 30-second sound bites (now down to 10 seconds or less), lowest common denominator programming, credulous presentations on pseudoscience and superstition, but especially a kind of celebration of ignorance.
— Carl Sagan, The Demon-Haunted World: Science as a Candle in the Dark (New York: Ballantine Books, 1996) at p.32.

Tennessee Governor Bill Haslam snubs President Obama again
Chattanooga Times Free Press: [Haslam spokesman David] Smith didn’t provide any information about what the governor would be doing today. There are no events listed on his public schedule. Stay classy. That’s what you get when you vote for the “lesser of two evils”. REMEMBER FOLKS: The lesser of two evils is still evil, and […]

TWO AND A HALF YEARS. Never committed a crime. Land of the free.
Pediatrician: Vaccinate Your Kids—Or Get Out of My Office
Russell Saunders, a pediatrician in New England, writing at The Daily Beast: Declining vaccines is, at best, misguided. But of course those inclined to refuse them don’t agree with me, and I’m not going to try to change their minds. I’ve had too many of that kind of conversation over the years to hold out […]
Penn on Daylight Savings Time
I couldn’t agree more with Penn’s conclusion: Now, I meet people, you know this, I have met people–Matt Donnelly–who believe in Chiropractors. I have met people who believe in circumcision. I have met people, I have met them personally, who are anti-vaccination. I have met people that believe in a supreme being–omniscient, omnipotent, omnipresent–who cares […]
WSJ: NSA Monitoring Includes Three Major Phone Companies, as Well as Online Activity
Honestly, I don’t know why so many people are getting so upset about this. Let me rephrase that: I honestly don’t know why so many people are just now getting so upset about this! Unless you’ve been practicing willful ignorance — for political or other reasons — then you’ve known full well about (or at […]
HP introduces new Apple iMac
Matthew Panzarino writing at The Next Web: The Spectre One desktop, which was released in a PR flood at midnight last night, looks like absolutely nothing other than a complete clone of Apple’s iMac. Note that even the keyboard and touchpad are nearly complete clones of Apple’s offerings. This is just a sad day for […]
The Obama GITMO myth
Glenn Greenwald writing at Salon.com: New vindictive restrictions on detainees highlights the falsity of Obama defenders regarding closing the camp During the Bush years, the plight of these detainees was a major source of political controversy, but under Obama, it is now almost entirely forgotten. On those rare occasions when it is raised, Obama defenders […]
The Assassination of Clint Eastwood by the Coward Mitt Romney
Tom Scocca writing at Slate: Is there anyone this campaign won’t sell out? The Mitt Romney campaign had two things to convey about the candidate at the Republican convention: his steadfast likability as a human being, and his hyper-competence as an executive. Whatever progress they made on either front was gone by Friday afternoon, as […]
Johnson campaign has had enough of Republican ballot shenanigans
Karl Dickey writing at Observer.com: With word Friday that a challenge has been lodged in Ohio to try to remove Libertarian Party presidential candidate and former New Mexico Governor Gary Johnson’s name from the November ballot in Ohio, a senior advisor to Johnson’s campaign is charging that the national Republican Party is mounting a concerted […]
Bill Nye, the Science Guy, Death Hoax
via Gossip Cop: Bill Nye is the latest victim of a death hoax. The sick rumor was started on Twitter late Sunday until a “R.I.P. Bill Nye The Science Guy” topic began trending, which in turn spawned thousands of messages mourning his supposed death. It is 100% false. Nye is NOT dead. Funny thing is […]
