News Gathering vs. Confirmation Bias
- Remember, if you do not have at least one source of news that you turn to regularly, with which you routinely disagree, then you are not practicing news gathering! You are practicing [confirmation bias].

[S]cience is more than a body of knowledge; it is a way of thinking. I have a foreboding of an America in my children's or grandchildren's time – when the United States is a service and information economy; when nearly all the key manufacturing industries have slipped away to other countries; when awesome technological powers are in the hands of a very few, and no one representing the public interest can even grasp the issues; when the people have lost the ability to set their own agendas or knowledgeably question those in authority; when, clutching our crystals and nervously consulting our horoscopes, our critical faculties in decline, unable to distinguish between what feels good and what's true, we slide, almost without noticing, back into superstition and darkness.
The dumbing down of America is most evident in the slow decay of substantive content in the enormously influential media, the 30-second sound bites (now down to 10 seconds or less), lowest common denominator programming, credulous presentations on pseudoscience and superstition, but especially a kind of celebration of ignorance.
— Carl Sagan, The Demon-Haunted World: Science as a Candle in the Dark (New York: Ballantine Books, 1996) at p.32.

Batkid completes San Francisco mission; hero’s welcome planned
The story of Batkid is unbelievably heart-warming. Bravo, San Franciscans! Coordinated by the Make-A-Wish Foundation, Miles’ escapade was complete with donated Lamborghinis that were turned into Batmobiles, a personal call from Police Chief Greg Suhr asking for help, and a live television broadcast kicking off the adventure.
Scouts Honor: Inside a Marching Brotherhood
Sizzle Reel for the upcoming documentary Scouts Honor: Inside a Marching Brotherhood about the Madison Scouts Drum and Bugle Corps, a corps I had the honor of marching with way back in 1982. Often referred to as “marching band on steroids”, drum and bugle corps takes the marching arts to the next level, and one […]
Cream always rises to the top: Van Halen’s A Different Kind of Truth
Recently in a fit of nostalgia — or maybe it was because I happened to catch David Lee Roth on Jay Mohr‘s podcast — I bought last year’s Van Halen A Different Kind of Truth. Plus, what the hell — I’ve already got the rest of the Van Halen catalog (and the David Lee Roth […]
Nest Learning Thermostat is a Remarkable Device
Wow. Just wow. I follow the technology- and Apple-centric news sites and blogs, so of course I’ve been hearing about the Nest Learning Thermostat for a while. I really hadn’t given serious thought to getting one until about a week ago, when my home thermostat lost touch sensitivity on the middle third of the touch […]
‘This Could Be Big’ drives bigger interest in MTSU hybrid
MTSU News and Media Relations via MTSUNews.com: September 10, 2012 This could be big? Overnight, it’s become huge for MTSU engineering technology professor Dr. Charles Perry. Television journalist Bill Weir and the ABC News/Yahoo! News “This Could Be Big” online collaboration has rocketed interest in Perry’s plug-in hybrid retrofit kit motor project into a new […]
Superman, Wonder Woman lock lips to become DC Comics’ true power couple
Associated Press: PHILADELPHIA (AP) — Wonder Woman and Superman are an item, locking lips in a passionate embrace as the pair realize that there’s no one out there like them. The couple’s kiss is the culmination of a dramatic story in “Justice League” No. 12, which marks the first full year since DC relaunched its […]
Why Glengarry Glen Ross’ Alec Baldwin scene is so unusual
My wife and I re-watched Glengarry Glen Ross this past weekend, and I am always struck by the Alec Baldwin scene. Alec Baldwin only appears in Glengarry Glen Ross for something on the order of five or six minutes, but arguably, his scene not only makes the whole movie, but he turns in perhaps the […]
Potliquor and what it tells us about iTunes
For anyone who still doubts the breadth and depth, or value, of iTunes, I present for your consideration the iTunes Artist Page for Potliquor. This small southern rock band from Baton Rouge, Louisiana, whose heyday, if you can call it that, was in the early 70s, is now on iTunes. So obscure is this band, […]
Giants defeat Patriots, 21-17, in Super Bowl XLVI
Associated Press: INDIANAPOLIS — Eli Manning and the Giants one-upped Tom Brady and the Patriots again, coming back with a last-minute score to beat New England 21-17 Sunday night for New York’s fourth Super Bowl title. It was a rematch of Super Bowl XLII, when Manning led New York past New England to ruin the […]
Kevin Smith’s The Bionic Man continues to impress
Yes, fine–I’ll concede that we’re only two issues into this series, but honestly, perhaps the best thing I can say about any comic book is that it entertains me, keeps my attention, has good artwork, and keeps me wanting more. That certainly describes The Bionic Man, at least for me.
