The Final Debate

Or should I say, The Final Debase…

The paper of record:

But the debate wasn’t normal by the standards of nearly all of American history. It wasn’t normal because one of the nominees — the sitting president — told one lie after another. He did so about the virus, North Korea, China, Russia, climate change, his own health care policy, Joe Biden’s health care policy, Biden’s finances and the immigrant children who were separated from their parents.

No shit. He lies like a rug.

No previous president has behaved this way. Democrats often accused George W. Bush of lying, and Republicans accused Barack Obama of lying. And both men made questionable statements and statements that later proved untrue. But when they proved untrue, Bush and Obama stopped making the claims. Trump just keeps making them.

Boy does he.

I take full responsibility, but China brought it here. It’s not my fault

Someone doesn’t understand the meaning of “full” or “responsibility”.

Biden Will Make America Lead Again

William McRaven, retired Navy admiral, former Navy SEAL, and commander of the U.S. Special Operations Command from 2011-2014, writing at the Wall Street Journal* (paywalled)(free apple news link):

For all the challenges the past 20 years brought on this country—for all the loss, the heartache, the hubris and the errant decisions—in times of crisis, the world still looked to America to lead. […]

Now, the world no longer looks up to America. They have been witness to our dismissiveness, our lack of respect and our transactional approach to global issues. They have seen us tear up our treaties, leave our allies on the battlefield and cozy up to despots and dictators. They have seen our incompetence in handling the pandemic and the wildfires. They have seen us struggle with social injustice. They no longer think we can lead, because they have seen an ineptness and a disdain for civility that is beyond anything in their memory. But, without American leadership the world will indeed be transformed, just not in the way we hope. […]

Truth be told, I am a pro-life, pro-Second Amendment, small-government, strong-defense and a national-anthem-standing conservative. But, I also believe that black lives matter, that the Dreamers deserve a path to citizenship, that diversity and inclusion are essential to our national success, that education is the great equalizer, that climate change is real and that the First Amendment is the cornerstone of our democracy. Most important, I believe that America must lead in the world with courage, conviction and a sense of honor and humility. […]

I voted for Joe Biden.

As an actual Conservative, who actually practices American Conservatism — as opposed to the fakers who simply call themselves “conservative” but wouldn’t recognize Conservatism if it slapped them in the face — I understand completely.

yeah, in a minute…
* And please do note that the Wall Street Journal is not exactly knows as a bastion of liberalism…

The Case Against Donald Trump

The Editorial Board of the paper of record:

He is a racist demagogue presiding over an increasingly diverse country; an isolationist in an interconnected world; a showman forever boasting about things he has never done, and promising to do things he never will.

Precisely.

Perfect.

Sundance caught a bird…

Looking back through old notes on my iPhone, I found the following, dated 4 August 2016:

Our German Shepherd, Sundance, just caught a bird. A bird. Not a baby bird, mind you, nor an old sickly bird, but a seemingly normal bird who obviously didn’t realize that even at a flat-out sprint, Sundance can still jump over six feet in the air. Poor bird… r.i.p.

Goddamn I miss my dog.

Penn: I want a president who is kind and inclusive, and thinks before he speaks

Penn Jillette on the Penn’s Sunday School podcast Episode 642 of 29 September 2020 @ 42:11.

Somebody […] one of the listeners challenged us […] to say good things about Donald Trump as president. […] I have always wanted to see what it was like to have a president without a filter. We ran that experiment and I don’t like it. But, I wanted to run that experiment. I really did, so it’s good that we ran that experiment — now we don’t have to do it again. I now want a president who is kind, and inclusive and thinks before he speaks, and more important tweets. I want that from a president. I didn’t think that measured was that important. I want unfiltered on Celebrity Apprentice and in improv and I want filtered in politics. I didn’t know that before — I now know it.

Ditto. In fact, I’ve said for decades that I would likely vote for a candidate who just spoke plainly even if I disagreed with that candidates politics, and I would then blather on about how disingenuous candidates and politicians sound once they “commence to speachifyin’.”

All it took was for the so-called “conservative” sheeple of this country to hand Comrade Super-spreader the nomination four years ago to teach me my fucking lesson! I didn’t vote for Trump four years ago, and I won’t vote for him today for exactly the same reason: he’s not a Conservative.

Remembering Cisco Landry, eight years on

As I do every year on the 9th of October, I take a few moments to remember…

Eight years ago today, my family lost a beloved member… our faithful companion, Cisco Landry.

All Music Guide:

Eddie Van Halen, 1955-2020

His dazzling, pyrotechnic playing set a new standard for guitar heroes, and cemented Van Halen as one of hard rock’s defining bands. From his boatload of classic riffs to his remarkable array of techniques to his beaming charisma, few guitarists made such a singular impact.

Indeed.
